Goalkeepers:
Man United have had a few decent keepers in the past 20 years. There was Peter Schmiecal known as ‘The great Dane’. He did some amazing saves in this time and took over 10 goalkeepers to replace him before they found Edwin van de Sar, who signed from Fulham in 2003, was one of the best keepers of all time. Also in 2011, Edwin sadly retired but then United signed David de Gea from Atletico Madrid and struggled to settle in but has started to find his form by becoming arguablly the second best keeper in the world.

Full backs:
Like the keepers, the left backs have been amazing. Denis Irwin was a rapid left back in the late ’90s and was also a regular penalty-taker. Phil Nevielle, brother of right back Gary Nevielle, is now a Match of the Day pundit. Another great United left back was Patrice Evra and has now moved to Juventus last year after his contract ran out. Just because I like penalties I’m going for Denis Irwin. The right backs weren’t so good Gary Nevielle it is.

Centre Backs:
Unlike the keepers and full backs, the United centre backs have been extremely awesome over the past 20 years. Jaap Stam, who the fans chanted ‘Jip Jaap Stam is the big Dutchman, try and get past him if you can’, was the greatest of them all and is in my team. Also there were, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand. All really good. I’m going for Brucie.

Centre Midfielders:
Roy Keane, an amazingly bossy midfielder, who if you played with him you wouldn’t want to do anything wrong. Paul Scholes, aka ‘ The Ginger Ninja’, was a great player to look up to. Nicky Butt ( don’t laugh, he was actually amazing) . I say Scholesy and Keano.

Wingers:
Pure skill, speed and agility is needed when playing on the wing, these players ticked all the boxes. Andrei Kanchelskis was a brilliant winger who tore teams to shreds with his skill. Then there was Ryan Giggs ( born as Ryan Wilson) who like Kanchelskis, went past one player, past another. If you go on youtube and type in Ryan Giggs 1999 fa cup semi-final replay goal vs Arsenal and you will see what he does best. David Beckham, who scored a goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon in 1995, is now a celebrity earning so much money I can’t even count it. Then Cristiano Ronaldo signed from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, who is now I and so many other people say the best player in the world, and in 2009 joined Real Madrid for £80m. The best present United winger is Antonio Valencia who is one of the fastest players in the world. It’s my choice to choose the best players and I’m saying Giggs and Beckham.

Strikers:
Most kids dream of being a striker and these guys did to. Wayne Rooney is an amazing striker and is now captain of Man United. There were Cantona, Solksjaer, van Nistelrooy,Sheringham, Andy Cole, Yorke, Hughes. I’m choosing Cole and Yorke.

Rounders Tournament

On Tuesday we went to school and encountered a bus that was ready to take us to Spalding High school to play rounders.

When we arrived, we made a toilet stop and then prepared…

The game had started and a Gedney Drove End group was first. (I wasn’t in it; I was in the third.) We fought well, but lost our rounds to other schools- one of which was the winning school.

Now it was GDE vs HSM. This was a friendly match and also our final match for the day. Weirdly, we drew the match with three and a half rounders… just our luck, I guess.

Finally, as expected, we lost the game to many other schools (including Westmere- yes, the whole community was there). We played well- just not well enough, unfortunately. Now we were on our way home to school. Oddly, we were back early!

Signing the log

On Monday, we went to Ferry Meadows to do something called Geocaching. Geocaching is a fun, worldwide treasure hunt. Holbeach St Marks joined us to go geocaching.

First, we approached our way to the bus which would take us to Ferry Meadows.

Soon after, we arrived and it didn’t take us long to start sniffing out caches. With our heads held high and phones in hands, we tracked down our first geocache!

Excited, we carried on searching. Our destination was approximately 200 feet away (all the way there we only heard Lani complaining her legs hurt).

By 12:00pm, we had found about six geocaches and had started feasting on our food.

With a stomach full of food, we carried on searching… and searching… until it was time to head back to the bus.

Forty-five minutes later, we were all tired but, most of all, we were home.

Can Charlie and Tom overcome their fears and go on a wild adventure?

Can they swim to safe lands?

Charlie, who was ten years old and very clever, was lounging on the sofa with her feet up, groaning next to her twin brother, Tom.

“Mum said she wants us playing so we can’t watch TV,” snapped Charlie, sourly.

“So, what shall we do then?” asked Tom.

“Let’s go outside and play football,” Charlie replied.

“Mum, can I have the keys because we’re going outside?” Tom shouted.

“Yes, here you go,” said Mum, handing him the keys.

“What’s this?” Tom asked. Feeling inquisitive, he walked towards it. “It’s a tunnel! Let’s see where it leads…”

“Please don’t go out of sight!” yelled their Dad- but they were already climbing through the tunnel. They climbed and climbed until their legs ached.

“What’s that in the distance?” asked Tom.

“I think it’s freedom!” Charlie screamed. “Yippee!”

They both crawled as fast as they could to the hole in the tunnel. They walked out and found themselves in complete darkness.

“What are we going to do?” cried Tom and Charlie together. Then they both replied, “I don’t know!”

Feeling around, they managed to only just make out that they were somewhere in a grassland. Then, as they took a step forward, the worst thing happened- the one thing they were hoping not to happen… They both fell face-first into a river. Tom hoped that there were no sharks or crocodiles. But Charlie just screamed:

“Help! I can’t swim!”

And, it was at that point that Tom realised that there was a rope on the riverside.

“I need to wrap it round her two wrists and tie it round my body. Now I can swim the opposite way as the current isn’t very high,” Tom said confidently. Then, before Tom could try his new invention, a fishing net went over the two children and a torch shone on them.

“Whatever are you doing in the sea?” cried a familiar voice. It was Mr Float, the lifeguard at Sunny Sand beach, with his girlfriend, Miss Sink. “Why are you at the beach at 10:35 am?”

“Well, it’s a long story…” said Tom, in an ashamed voice.

“Let’s get you out of that mud you’re stuck in,” Mr Float said politely.

“What mud?” asked Charlie.

“That mud underneath you,” explained Miss Sink.

“Aaaah!” said the two children.

So, Mr Float and Miss Sink rescued them and took them home where their angry Mum and Dad were waiting.

“I’m telling Mum and Dad that it was your fault,” said Tom- but Charlie just moaned miserably.

“Don’t be such a tell-tale!”

Both of their parents were not impressed. They took no nonsense and grounded them. But, they also had to some chores in the house and garden. Finally, they finished all their jobs.

“Can we watch TV, please?” asked Charlie.

“No, I would like you to play!”

But Charlie was already fast asleep.

Congratulations to the winning team from Gedney Drove End!

Children from years 3 and 4 took part in a tough maths quiz- but only one team could triumph!

Held at Westmere, the Maths Mania competition saw children from five local schools using their skills to answer questions in five brain-boggling rounds.

“It was very tricky,” said Lani. “I was surprised we won but we tried hard!”

After a shaky start, the Gedney Drove End team soon equalised with Westmere and Long Sutton, before racing ahead in the tie-breaker round.

“When I saw we were tied for points, I was gutted,” said Callum M.

But the tension didn’t last long. Parents and supporters cheered and applauded as our delighted team collected their trophy and certificates.

“The moment when Mr Davies said, in the tie-breaker, “He’s got it!” was one of the best moments of the day,” said Callum H.

We at Gedney Drove End are very proud of all the children who took part- you really are superstars!

On Tuesday, 9th of June, Class 2 and Class 3 from Gedney Drove End and Holbeach St Marks went to the village hall to take part in a drama workshop organised by Father Johnathon and Spalding based Act II.

First, we played some games with Charlotte and Alice to help us relax and prepare for rehearsals. They were great fun and we’d like to play them again in school.

We all read through the poem to see what it was all about- and then we were ready to begin!

Together, we made up actions to go with the first two verses.

Photo 09-06-2015 11 20 49

After that, we split into groups of six or seven and each group had a verse to act out. It was lots of fun making up actions to go with the words!

Then, we put it all together and watched each other’s performances. We rehearsed it a few times until we were perfect and knew when it was our turn to perform.

At the end of the acting, we had to sing a song. Elisha was chosen to perform a solo and we all joined in with her.

Soon, after lunch, we learned a dance to “Spirit in the sky” (which only the teachers, who are older, knew). It had great actions and was lots of fun to do!

We then mashed it all together from start to finish and prepared for our performance at 2:15pm.

When the time came, we were nervous but excited to be performing to such a large crowd! We loved practising- but was it enough?

Father Johnathon spoke to the audience for a while, then Charlotte and Alice introduced us. It was showtime!

The crowd went wild and really enjoyed our performance- almost as much as we did! They clapped and cheered for a long time.

All in all, we had a lovely day and would like to say thank you to the organisers and audience.

My Pet

12

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Finley | Posted on June 3, 2015

I am going to write about my new pet, Rocky. Rocky is a hamster. He is a Siberian, long-haired hamster.

My hamster has a Rotastak cage that has loads of pipes linked to it. He also has his very own hamster ball. I put him in it so he can get some exercise (but he normally falls asleep). We also put him in so he can explore my room.

Rocky has escaped once: he escaped because someone had left the lid open. When I woke up, I turned my room upside down looking for him. But then I had to go to school. I was very worried about him- I was beginning to think he had been eaten by my dog! It was only then when I found out he was behind Alfie’s cabinet. I was so happy to find out he was safe!

I have to brush him at least once a week. The way I do that is by putting him in his pet carrier. This is a difficult job because he is not quite tame yet so he tries to nip me. I need to take off the pipe he is in and put it in his pet carrier.

I feed him: dried sunflower seeds, dried sweet corn and dried lettuce. He really likes apple and he also likes these little treats called milk drops. I give him them to him to hopefully tame him so he doesn’t bite me. Rocky also had a carrot-shaped breath refresher. This means my room won’t stink so much!

I got Rocky from Pets at Home in Wisbech. When we got him, he looked like he was made from gold. He really stood out from every other hamster there. He was the perfect match and I don’t have any regrets about buying him.
