Tall Tales…

1

We all know it’s wrong to tell lies, but a tall tale can be very amusing!

Today we played a game where we had to use certain, randomly-chosen items to escape a dangerous situation. What would you do if you were chased up a tree by a bear? How would you escape armed only with some lipstick, a Jenga game piece and some of Mr T’s bling? Or a pantomime horse costume?

Dear Diary…

What I am now writing is gross but quite funny! Also, it is dangerous. Never do this at home!

So, it started like this: a bear was chasing me, so, I ran up a tree, but, it was a grizzly brown bear so it can climb trees. It wasn’t the best place to hide… It was a girl bear so it saw my bright red lipstick and, just to get her away, I threw it down to her; she was delighted to have it. She came back but, of course, I did not have any more lipstick so I said, “What do you want?” and she said, “I want to play Jenga!” So I got a Jenga stick and shaped it like an arrow and threw it at her bottom. She screamed and ran home.

Next came her mother- furious! I said, “Why are you furious?” and she said, “Because you have hurt my daughter!” Then she saw Mr T’s jewellery and said, “I want that jewellery!” So I gave her it. And I never saw the bear family again!

Elisha

So I’m trapped up a tree with a bear attacking me… Harry Potter’s owl (Hedwig) flew with a pantomime horse outfit and a tin of Alphabetti Spaghetti. I poured the the spaghetti into the horse costume and dropped it- and he bit it! He didn’t like it much, so, convinced he had eaten the horse, he walked away.

Who were Kha and Merit?

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Jacob C | Posted on October 21, 2015

kha and merit

Over 3000 years ago a couple named Kha and Merit walked on this very earth and now- thanks to modern computers- we can go directly  into the lives of Kha and Merit.

Kha and Merit were high ranking members of a society in the valley of kings. While Kha was a high ranking male who loved black eyeliner, Merit however was a very privileged house wife.

The couple were probably nobles due to their high value clothing, food and jewellery. They were probably good companions of the pharaoh. As proof of their importance, they were mummified  and were buried with most of their privileges. However there’s still a lot we don’t know about Kha and Merit.

Many years have passed and the age of the pharaoh has came to a glorious end and so that’s the TRUE story of Kha and Merit.

Our Federation team

On Friday the 16th of October 2015, children from Gedney Drove End and Holbeach St Marks joined together to compete in the annual Elite Sport Academy Year 5/6 Football Tournament at Pinchbeck United FC.

After arriving, we began our pre-match warm up with some passing skills and penalty practice. Our coach, Mr Davies, joined in and gave us a team talk to make sure we were ready and on top of our game.

Pre-match pep talk

Our first match was against Surfleet. We started strong, with Jake defending excellently and Callum tackling confidently, and it looked as if we had the other team cornered. Unfortunately, a couple of minutes later, the tables turned and we lost 2-0.

“Our play was a bit dubious,” said Jake. “We seemed to be attacking the same ball and made some mistakes. We’ll do better in the next match.”

Excellent defending

However, Jake was wrong. Despite excellent play from George and Max, and some awesome saves from James, our second game against Market Deeping resulted in a 3-0 defeat. Team captain, Max, said, “We let the team down by letting those goals in on the corners, but we’ll work on that at the training ground. We’re really fired up for the next game.”

Keeping up the pressure

Our final game of the morning was the most exciting yet! Ayscoughfee were a tough side, but we were nippy, and both teams looked to be fairly evenly matched until the opposition scored three devastating goals in quick succession. A cracking goal from Callum wasn’t enough to win us the game, but we did do well enough to qualify for the Silver Cup.

Perfect tackle

The quarter final against Spalding Primary was fast paced and fierce, with an accidental own goal by the other team, a direct result of our continued pressure on their players, putting us in the lead early on. The win was solidified by Charlie scoring a neat goal just a couple of minutes later. Victorious and elated, we couldn’t believe how our luck had changed. Finally, everything was coming together!

Triumphant!

In the semi-final, against Westmere A, Callum again scored two extraordinary goals, making him the tournament’s top goal scorer. There were lots of other opportunities for both teams to take a shot, but the score stayed low. Westmere managed to claw one back but it wasn’t enough- and we were through to the final!

Total focus

The whole crowd gathered to watch us battle Ayscoughfee B. Frankie tried his best but narrowly missed an early goal, while James fought off a couple of chancers with some fantastic saves. The tackling was brutal: neither team willing to give up control of the ball.

Heads up!

Breaking away

However, our team dominated and only the clock running out prevented us from scoring a decisive goal. Groans erupted around the field when we realised this exciting final would be ultimately decided on penalties…

Luckily (or unluckily) we weren’t in agony for long. An Ascoughfee save followed by a low, hard goal ended the game abruptly. However, second place in the Silver Cup felt like a win- especially after how the morning had gone!

Disappointed…

Photo 16-10-2015, 13 29 41

… but still proud!

“It was a super turnaround for a super team,” said Max. “It could have gone better but we all tried our best and in the end their goalie was just too good.”

“Today proved you should never, never, never give up,” agreed Callum.

Collecting our certificates

Coach Davies had this to add: “First and foremost, I am immensely proud of every single one of those boys who represented our schools today. They were warriors who battled to the end. We were the underdogs throughout but determination, effort and team spirit meant we lost only by a single kick. Those boys deserve the utmost respect and the other schools should be hoping to avoid us at future competitions. We are hungry- so watch out!”

Life in Ancient Egypt

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Class 3 | Posted on October 15, 2015

This term, we’ve been learning about Pharaohs and life in Ancient Egypt. To demonstrate everything we’ve learned, we will be writing a non-chronological report.

As part of our preparation, we collated all of our knowledge and worked with a partner to make notes that we will later turn into paragraphs.

On the 27th of September it was my birthday so, as a treat, Mum and dad said I could take a friend and we could go to the circus. The circus was at Kings Lynn so it did not take long to get there. I was excited, excited because it had been a long while since I have been there. My friend Louise had never been to a circus. When we got there, we parked our car and walked to get our tickets for the show that started at 2:00 clock

Kate’s Adventures

written by Lani

Kate was always getting into trouble.

It was just that whenever she wanted something nice to come out of her mouth they would change and come out as mean words!

One cold winters day her cousin, Chantelle was coming, but there was one problem, she always had to be perfect, her clothes, her hair , her teddies all had to be lined up and worst of all , she wanted everything to be her way

Her mum and dad were going on holiday and had to leave the grumpy grouch at Kate’s house. “Hello” Chantelle said strutting through the door. “It smells of dust and I am allergic to it. And so when her mum and dad had gone they hoovered: Kate on the Hoover, Her mum on the duster and her dad on the steam cleaner.

Miss West is always encouraging us to be independent- and one of the ways we learn to do this is by assessing each others’ work sometimes.

Reading together

We agree on the success criteria, so we know what to look for, and work with a partner to read and discuss a piece of writing. It helps us know what we have done well, and what we can work to improve. Plus, it’s lots of fun to “be the teacher”!

We try to be fair, tactful and constructive in our comments. Often, we end up with extra ideas on how to improve our writing after looking carefully at someone else’s, so everyone is a winner!

BOYS sentences

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Amber, Ethan, Finley, Jack P, Jacob R, Johnny | Posted on October 1, 2015

In English, we’ve learned a new Alan Peat sentence called BOYS, which stands for BUT, OR, YET and SO. We have to remember to use a comma too!

Grimstone was annoying Jelly, so Jelly threw his sweets everywhere. (Johnny)

Mr Lightspeed was surprised to see Sennapod, yet his startled face was hidden by a phoney smile. (Jack P)

Buffy was being naughty, so I rode her more. (Amber)

Jelly was enormous, but that did not stop him from popping sweets into his mouth. (Jacob R)

I couldn’t stand not going on a train, so I rode one. (Ethan)

Jelly was annoying Grimstone, yet he wouldn’t show it. (Finley)
