Blogging from A to Z: Queen Victoria

Q

We created an A to Z of words that made us think about something we’ve learned about the Victorians, and used them for inspiration to write our blog posts. Some links are more obvious than others, but all of our posts are original, interesting and the result of our hard work! Enjoy 🙂

Queen Victoria was the queen

Using her noggin she changed pretty much all of England

Electricity was made during her reign

Edward VII became King when Victoria died

Nineteen zero one was the year she passed away

Victoria died of a cerebral hemorrhage

In 1837 Victoria became Queen of England

Children were made to work down in the mines and up chimneys

The Queen married Prince Albert in 1840

On her throne was where she sat

Revolution was the name of what Victoria did for Britain

Industrial Revolution, in fact

Also, in my opinion, Queen Victoria helped our country but she wasn’t a nice lady…

Ryan: The Man Behind the Goals.

1

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Callum H | Posted on December 16, 2015

This is the story of Ryan Wilson who went from representing his local team on a muddy village field every weekend, to winning the World Cup with England.

Ryan was a nine year old boy who never gave up on trying to score that one goal. Every weekend he tried to score. Then, one Saturday, it was the game against ‘the worst team in the league’  and Ryan knew that this would be the game he scored that one goal.

The game kicked off with the coaches leaving Ryan on the subs bench which left Ryan upset.

“I’m not going to score!” he groaned. He pleaded with Kev ( his coach). “Can I come on now?” Ryan asked. ” At half-time” Kev replied. So Ryan waited second by second, minute by minute for that whistle to blow for half-time.

At half-time the whistle blew and Ryan cheered and took his coat off ready to come on. By the end of the game the score was 3-0 with Ryan scoring all three.

By the end of the season, Ryan’s mum got an email from Peterborough United’s scout asking if he could play for their U11s. Ryan dreamed of if he was going to play professional football for Peterborough.

As years passed by, Ryan was twenty and it was Peterborough’s last game of the season- and Ryan was selected as striker for the game! If Peterborough won, they would win the league.

Ryan kept shooting but narrowly missed too many opportunities. But then, Peterborough were awarded a penalty.

Ryan said, “I’m taking this!” So he stepped up to take the kick and smashed it in the corner to make it 1-0 to Peterborough. A few minutes later, Ryan scored a cracking goal to make it 2-0. Then the referee blew for full-time and the Peterborough fans went crazy. ‘Boro’s captain lifted the trophy and Ryan went wild.

In July, Manchester United put a bid of £5,000,000 for Ryan. He just couldn’t turn the offer down. So Ryan was playing for his dream club, Manchester United. The manager thought, a twenty year old can’t just come then play straight away, so the manager asked Ryan if he could play a few games before their star striker got a bad injury. So Ryan played the rest of the season for the proper team. He played so well that he got chosen to play for England in the World Cup.

After the World Cup, Ryan stared every game and led England to the final where, against Germany, it was 0-0 until the last minute. England got a penalty and Ryan was chosen to take it. He stepped up… and scored!

“England have won the World Cup!” the commentator shouted.

So that was Ryan’s story of football: Ryan, the man behind the goals.

Our day at the Snow Centre

As part of our Frozen Kingdom topic, we took part in a thrilling adventure at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

When we arrived, we were given our ski boots and skis for our first activity. Heavy and tight, clumpy and painful, the boots were essential kit. Next, we chose a helmet and listened to our instructors. Photo 24-11-2015, 11 30 10 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 34 20 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 34 15 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 03 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 02 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 00

Skiing was fun but hard: the triangle position and walking in the skis made our legs tired and, if you angled the skis in the wrong way, you might even end up going backwards! Lewie and Jack R were naturals, but everyone did well with this new sport.

After lunch, we put on different boots because it was time to try snowboarding! The instructor showed us how to strap into the boards and slow ourselves down once we started moving. We all had a try and- apart from a few people landing on their bottoms- we picked it up quite quickly. It wasn’t long before we were riding the boards down a slope and even doing some tricks! Jack P, Callum M, Finley and Max made it look easy by mastering it straight away but Elisha, Amber, Jake and Matthew soon followed in their tracks. It was great fun!

Our final activity was sledging. This was the noisiest and busiest activity!

Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 12 Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 45 Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 13

Everyone had a try, and it was certainly hilarious to watch! Foam snowmen were set up at the bottom of the slope for target practice and Jacob C, Jack P, Finley and Charlie took them down on their first go. Jacob R floated down the slope like a snow king; Ethan high-fived passers-by; Jack A was attacked by a gang of inflatable doughnuts and Lani span (and screamed) all the way down! Miss West was particularly amused with Johnny’s emergency exit over the barrier… Callum H tried a bobsleigh technique with Max and Callum M, ending up in a tangle of limbs against the barrier. Luckily, the only injury was aching tummies from laughing so hard!

Video 24-11-2015, 14 53 20

We all enjoyed our day at the Snow Centre, and were disappointed when it was time to leave! We tried to decide which activity was our favourite- but we had a huge amount of fun with all of them!

Ryan said, “Sledging was my favourite because we got to knock down snowmen.”

“My favorite was skiing,” said Ellie. “Even though it was challenging, I’d like to do it again.”

Chris enjoyed the sledging most. He said, “On most of my runs, I fell down and it was funny for other people to watch!”

To, too or two?

Today, we looked at the difference between to, too and two, which are often confused- even by grown ups!

We learned that:

to is used with a destination or verb (I am going to the park; I want to play down the park)

too is used “as well” or to emphasise (I enjoyed it too; The food was too spicy for me)

two is a number (I had two puddings)

We wrote our own sentences using to, too or two. Did we use them correctly?

To kick off this term’s topic, today we were talking about icebergs. We held a giant ball of ice and felt how cold it was, and then looked at some pictures of stunning icebergs taken by explorers and travellers to the North and South poles.

Here are some of our fantastic descriptions:

Above, the iceberg is a mass of crystals. But below it is a wisp of emotion. From above, the iceberg looks like an elegant cloud; below, you can’t see its features in the blackening water. Above, there are jagged edges- but below, in the inspiring depths, it looks so smooth and thick. Jacob R

Slowly, the penguin populated iceberg drifted across the vast ocean. The more it drifted, the more it eroded. Frozen and cold, old and ancient, the iceberg homes hundreds of penguins and other sea birds. Deliberately, the graceful giant melted into the great sea. Jacob C

The iceberg, which is very big and looks like a ship riding across the ocean, has a lot of tiny spikes. Also, you could probably ride a ship under it. The iceberg, which looks like a ship, is very tall: it might have got together because of the freezing ocean waves crashing together. In the air, at the back, is a blank kind of thing that you could slip off easily. Jack R

The shark-like iceberg is floating around in peace. It’s like a shark: it’s scary, but, it is amazing! The detail is so cool: it’s like a shark holding onto a massive ice lump. The shark-like iceberg floats around whilst the carpet trails behind him. Elisha

The iceberg, which is swimming up into the sky, has a shark-like pose. The ice upon the water, which is so cold, has so much detail. The Arctic, where polar bears live, is also known as the North pole. Lani

The iceberg, which is a big slide for penguins, is floating across the Antarctic ocean. The cloud, which looks like a massive iceberg, flies across the sky. Johnny

The iceberg, which is forming like a puzzle, is wonderful to look at. The water, which is so cold and shiny, is clear. Max

The iceberg, which looks like a mashed potato, is partly underwater. The sky, which has different shades of blue, has a very amount of clouds. Callum H

Our Federation team

On Friday the 16th of October 2015, children from Gedney Drove End and Holbeach St Marks joined together to compete in the annual Elite Sport Academy Year 5/6 Football Tournament at Pinchbeck United FC.

After arriving, we began our pre-match warm up with some passing skills and penalty practice. Our coach, Mr Davies, joined in and gave us a team talk to make sure we were ready and on top of our game.

Pre-match pep talk

Our first match was against Surfleet. We started strong, with Jake defending excellently and Callum tackling confidently, and it looked as if we had the other team cornered. Unfortunately, a couple of minutes later, the tables turned and we lost 2-0.

“Our play was a bit dubious,” said Jake. “We seemed to be attacking the same ball and made some mistakes. We’ll do better in the next match.”

Excellent defending

However, Jake was wrong. Despite excellent play from George and Max, and some awesome saves from James, our second game against Market Deeping resulted in a 3-0 defeat. Team captain, Max, said, “We let the team down by letting those goals in on the corners, but we’ll work on that at the training ground. We’re really fired up for the next game.”

Keeping up the pressure

Our final game of the morning was the most exciting yet! Ayscoughfee were a tough side, but we were nippy, and both teams looked to be fairly evenly matched until the opposition scored three devastating goals in quick succession. A cracking goal from Callum wasn’t enough to win us the game, but we did do well enough to qualify for the Silver Cup.

Perfect tackle

The quarter final against Spalding Primary was fast paced and fierce, with an accidental own goal by the other team, a direct result of our continued pressure on their players, putting us in the lead early on. The win was solidified by Charlie scoring a neat goal just a couple of minutes later. Victorious and elated, we couldn’t believe how our luck had changed. Finally, everything was coming together!

Triumphant!

In the semi-final, against Westmere A, Callum again scored two extraordinary goals, making him the tournament’s top goal scorer. There were lots of other opportunities for both teams to take a shot, but the score stayed low. Westmere managed to claw one back but it wasn’t enough- and we were through to the final!

Total focus

The whole crowd gathered to watch us battle Ayscoughfee B. Frankie tried his best but narrowly missed an early goal, while James fought off a couple of chancers with some fantastic saves. The tackling was brutal: neither team willing to give up control of the ball.

Breaking away

However, our team dominated and only the clock running out prevented us from scoring a decisive goal. Groans erupted around the field when we realised this exciting final would be ultimately decided on penalties…

Luckily (or unluckily) we weren’t in agony for long. An Ascoughfee save followed by a low, hard goal ended the game abruptly. However, second place in the Silver Cup felt like a win- especially after how the morning had gone!

Photo 16-10-2015, 13 27 39

Disappointed…

Photo 16-10-2015, 13 29 41

… but still proud!

“It was a super turnaround for a super team,” said Max. “It could have gone better but we all tried our best and in the end their goalie was just too good.”

“Today proved you should never, never, never give up,” agreed Callum.

Collecting our certificates

Coach Davies had this to add: “First and foremost, I am immensely proud of every single one of those boys who represented our schools today. They were warriors who battled to the end. We were the underdogs throughout but determination, effort and team spirit meant we lost only by a single kick. Those boys deserve the utmost respect and the other schools should be hoping to avoid us at future competitions. We are hungry- so watch out!”

Reading together

We agree on the success criteria, so we know what to look for, and work with a partner to read and discuss a piece of writing. It helps us know what we have done well, and what we can work to improve. Plus, it’s lots of fun to “be the teacher”!

My Dream Team

Goalkeepers:
Man United have had a few decent keepers in the past 20 years. There was Peter Schmiecal known as ‘The great Dane’. He did some amazing saves in this time and took over 10 goalkeepers to replace him before they found Edwin van de Sar, who signed from Fulham in 2003, was one of the best keepers of all time. Also in 2011, Edwin sadly retired but then United signed David de Gea from Atletico Madrid and struggled to settle in but has started to find his form by becoming arguablly the second best keeper in the world.

Full backs:
Like the keepers, the left backs have been amazing. Denis Irwin was a rapid left back in the late ’90s and was also a regular penalty-taker. Phil Nevielle, brother of right back Gary Nevielle, is now a Match of the Day pundit. Another great United left back was Patrice Evra and has now moved to Juventus last year after his contract ran out. Just because I like penalties I’m going for Denis Irwin. The right backs weren’t so good Gary Nevielle it is.

Centre Backs:
Unlike the keepers and full backs, the United centre backs have been extremely awesome over the past 20 years. Jaap Stam, who the fans chanted ‘Jip Jaap Stam is the big Dutchman, try and get past him if you can’, was the greatest of them all and is in my team. Also there were, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand. All really good. I’m going for Brucie.

Centre Midfielders:
Roy Keane, an amazingly bossy midfielder, who if you played with him you wouldn’t want to do anything wrong. Paul Scholes, aka ‘ The Ginger Ninja’, was a great player to look up to. Nicky Butt ( don’t laugh, he was actually amazing) . I say Scholesy and Keano.

Wingers:
Pure skill, speed and agility is needed when playing on the wing, these players ticked all the boxes. Andrei Kanchelskis was a brilliant winger who tore teams to shreds with his skill. Then there was Ryan Giggs ( born as Ryan Wilson) who like Kanchelskis, went past one player, past another. If you go on youtube and type in Ryan Giggs 1999 fa cup semi-final replay goal vs Arsenal and you will see what he does best. David Beckham, who scored a goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon in 1995, is now a celebrity earning so much money I can’t even count it. Then Cristiano Ronaldo signed from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, who is now I and so many other people say the best player in the world, and in 2009 joined Real Madrid for £80m. The best present United winger is Antonio Valencia who is one of the fastest players in the world. It’s my choice to choose the best players and I’m saying Giggs and Beckham.

Strikers:
Most kids dream of being a striker and these guys did to. Wayne Rooney is an amazing striker and is now captain of Man United. There were Cantona, Solksjaer, van Nistelrooy,Sheringham, Andy Cole, Yorke, Hughes. I’m choosing Cole and Yorke.

Congratulations to the winning team from Gedney Drove End!

Children from years 3 and 4 took part in a tough maths quiz- but only one team could triumph!

Held at Westmere, the Maths Mania competition saw children from five local schools using their skills to answer questions in five brain-boggling rounds.

“It was very tricky,” said Lani. “I was surprised we won but we tried hard!”

After a shaky start, the Gedney Drove End team soon equalised with Westmere and Long Sutton, before racing ahead in the tie-breaker round.

“When I saw we were tied for points, I was gutted,” said Callum M.

But the tension didn’t last long. Parents and supporters cheered and applauded as our delighted team collected their trophy and certificates.

“The moment when Mr Davies said, in the tie-breaker, “He’s got it!” was one of the best moments of the day,” said Callum H.

We at Gedney Drove End are very proud of all the children who took part- you really are superstars!

Act II drama workshop

On Tuesday, 9th of June, Class 2 and Class 3 from Gedney Drove End and Holbeach St Marks went to the village hall to take part in a drama workshop organised by Father Johnathon and Spalding based Act II.

First, we played some games with Charlotte and Alice to help us relax and prepare for rehearsals. They were great fun and we’d like to play them again in school.

We all read through the poem to see what it was all about- and then we were ready to begin!

Together, we made up actions to go with the first two verses.

Photo 09-06-2015 11 20 49

After that, we split into groups of six or seven and each group had a verse to act out. It was lots of fun making up actions to go with the words!

Then, we put it all together and watched each other’s performances. We rehearsed it a few times until we were perfect and knew when it was our turn to perform.

At the end of the acting, we had to sing a song. Elisha was chosen to perform a solo and we all joined in with her.

Soon, after lunch, we learned a dance to “Spirit in the sky” (which only the teachers, who are older, knew). It had great actions and was lots of fun to do!

Photo 09-06-2015 14 33 36

We then mashed it all together from start to finish and prepared for our performance at 2:15pm.

When the time came, we were nervous but excited to be performing to such a large crowd! We loved practising- but was it enough?

Father Johnathon spoke to the audience for a while, then Charlotte and Alice introduced us. It was showtime!

The crowd went wild and really enjoyed our performance- almost as much as we did! They clapped and cheered for a long time.

All in all, we had a lovely day and would like to say thank you to the organisers and audience.

Our Roman Banquet

To celebrate the end of this term’s topic, the children chose to host a Roman banquet.

Years 4 and 5 planned it carefully while Year 6 were busy taking their SATs. They designed the invitations, chose the menu, made decorations, organised entertainment and created prizes and souvenirs for all the guests. They were very busy and did a fantastic job!

On the morning of the banquet, we also made bread to eat as one of the (many) courses.

Our Year 4 children were invited to take part in a special celebration of the story of Noah.

They explored the story through art, drama, dance and music- and everyone had a wonderful time!

We tested the regimes and evaluated how effective they were in making us fit, strong and ready for battle!
