Blogging from A to Z: Baths

2

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Eloise | Posted on April 2, 2016

B

We created an A to Z of words that made us think about something we’ve learned about the Victorians, and used them for inspiration to write our blog posts. Some links are more obvious than others, but all of our posts are original, interesting and the result of our hard work! Enjoy 🙂

Once, a long time ago, there were poor and rich people. The poor people didn’t have a lot of money. If people didn’t pay their bills, then they were put in jail- but that doesn’t matter. The main thing is here.

People, if they are rich or not, have to have baths one way or another. So the way they could do it was they got a size of tub (the size they were) and clean water and a hose and took the hose to a place where they keep it (possibly a tap) and put it in the tub. It doesn’t matter whoever it is- the Queen, a butler, a baker, everyone- as long as they have a bath.

Baths are very important because:

  1. you need them to keep clean
  2. when you go out you want to smell nice
  3. you need to keep clean, but as long as you don’t get muddy or mucky.

Keeping clean is the best idea ever. Not just us should have baths but everyone as well. Keeping clean is an important thing in the whole wide world and everybody should know that. It’s important because you don’t want people saying to you that you smell terrible! That will make you heart-broken so that will be terrible for you so everyone should know that when you take a bath you will smell loving and nicer than before in the whole wide world.

So remember- don’t forget to have a bath to make yourself a whole lot cleaner!

Our day at the Snow Centre

As part of our Frozen Kingdom topic, we took part in a thrilling adventure at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

When we arrived, we were given our ski boots and skis for our first activity. Heavy and tight, clumpy and painful, the boots were essential kit. Next, we chose a helmet and listened to our instructors. Photo 24-11-2015, 11 30 10 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 34 20 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 34 15 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 03 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 02 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 00

Skiing was fun but hard: the triangle position and walking in the skis made our legs tired and, if you angled the skis in the wrong way, you might even end up going backwards! Lewie and Jack R were naturals, but everyone did well with this new sport.

After lunch, we put on different boots because it was time to try snowboarding! The instructor showed us how to strap into the boards and slow ourselves down once we started moving. We all had a try and- apart from a few people landing on their bottoms- we picked it up quite quickly. It wasn’t long before we were riding the boards down a slope and even doing some tricks! Jack P, Callum M, Finley and Max made it look easy by mastering it straight away but Elisha, Amber, Jake and Matthew soon followed in their tracks. It was great fun!

Our final activity was sledging. This was the noisiest and busiest activity!

Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 12 Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 45 Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 13

Everyone had a try, and it was certainly hilarious to watch! Foam snowmen were set up at the bottom of the slope for target practice and Jacob C, Jack P, Finley and Charlie took them down on their first go. Jacob R floated down the slope like a snow king; Ethan high-fived passers-by; Jack A was attacked by a gang of inflatable doughnuts and Lani span (and screamed) all the way down! Miss West was particularly amused with Johnny’s emergency exit over the barrier… Callum H tried a bobsleigh technique with Max and Callum M, ending up in a tangle of limbs against the barrier. Luckily, the only injury was aching tummies from laughing so hard!

Video 24-11-2015, 14 53 20

We all enjoyed our day at the Snow Centre, and were disappointed when it was time to leave! We tried to decide which activity was our favourite- but we had a huge amount of fun with all of them!

Ryan said, “Sledging was my favourite because we got to knock down snowmen.”

“My favorite was skiing,” said Ellie. “Even though it was challenging, I’d like to do it again.”

Chris enjoyed the sledging most. He said, “On most of my runs, I fell down and it was funny for other people to watch!”

To, too or two?

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Amber, Callum H, Callum M, Charlie, Elisha, Eloise, Finley, Jack R, Jacob C, Jacob R, Jake, Johnny, Lani, Matthew C, Ryan | Posted on November 23, 2015

Today, we looked at the difference between to, too and two, which are often confused- even by grown ups!

We learned that:

to is used with a destination or verb (I am going to the park; I want to play down the park)

too is used “as well” or to emphasise (I enjoyed it too; The food was too spicy for me)

two is a number (I had two puddings)

We wrote our own sentences using to, too or two. Did we use them correctly?

Miss West is always encouraging us to be independent- and one of the ways we learn to do this is by assessing each others’ work sometimes.

Reading together

We agree on the success criteria, so we know what to look for, and work with a partner to read and discuss a piece of writing. It helps us know what we have done well, and what we can work to improve. Plus, it’s lots of fun to “be the teacher”!

Using the success criteria to record achievements and look for possible improvements

We try to be fair, tactful and constructive in our comments. Often, we end up with extra ideas on how to improve our writing after looking carefully at someone else’s, so everyone is a winner!

Lunchtime Leaders

Could you be a Lunchtime Leader?

Every week, three children volunteer to help at lunchtimes. They can help with anything from opening yogurts and cutting up food for the younger children to pouring water and dishing up the veg! They also wipe the tables and check the floor is clear before lessons start in the afternoon. In return, they are paid in Gedneys which they can spend in the shop.

If you’re interested in helping others and earning some extra Gedneys, you can ask Ellie (in Class 3) to allocate you a week in the timetable.

Act II drama workshop

On Tuesday, 9th of June, Class 2 and Class 3 from Gedney Drove End and Holbeach St Marks went to the village hall to take part in a drama workshop organised by Father Johnathon and Spalding based Act II.

First, we played some games with Charlotte and Alice to help us relax and prepare for rehearsals. They were great fun and we’d like to play them again in school.

Photo 09-06-2015 10 36 29

We all read through the poem to see what it was all about- and then we were ready to begin!

Together, we made up actions to go with the first two verses.

Photo 09-06-2015 11 20 49

After that, we split into groups of six or seven and each group had a verse to act out. It was lots of fun making up actions to go with the words!

Then, we put it all together and watched each other’s performances. We rehearsed it a few times until we were perfect and knew when it was our turn to perform.

At the end of the acting, we had to sing a song. Elisha was chosen to perform a solo and we all joined in with her.

Soon, after lunch, we learned a dance to “Spirit in the sky” (which only the teachers, who are older, knew). It had great actions and was lots of fun to do!

Photo 09-06-2015 14 33 36

We then mashed it all together from start to finish and prepared for our performance at 2:15pm.

When the time came, we were nervous but excited to be performing to such a large crowd! We loved practising- but was it enough?

Father Johnathon spoke to the audience for a while, then Charlotte and Alice introduced us. It was showtime!

The crowd went wild and really enjoyed our performance- almost as much as we did! They clapped and cheered for a long time.

All in all, we had a lovely day and would like to say thank you to the organisers and audience.

Our Roman Banquet

To celebrate the end of this term’s topic, the children chose to host a Roman banquet.

Years 4 and 5 planned it carefully while Year 6 were busy taking their SATs. They designed the invitations, chose the menu, made decorations, organised entertainment and created prizes and souvenirs for all the guests. They were very busy and did a fantastic job!

On the morning of the banquet, we also made bread to eat as one of the (many) courses.

What I Would Do With £100

0

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Eloise | Posted on March 11, 2015

I would give my dad £15 for petrol to come and see me so we could spend some time together by going to the park to play a game of football or just sitting down at aunty Vicky’s to play a board game.

I would also put £40 in petrol into Nan’s car so we could all travel to London to see my mum and also see my other Nan and Granddad with my aunties Steph and Sophie.

In London we can all walk around the science museum as it’s free to enter and it has lots of cool and valuable stuff there, which is very interesting, and they also have an area where you can do lots of different experiments.

I’d also like to visit the Victoria and Albert museum which is also free but I would pay £10 to go and see all the royal, famous and pretty ball gowns and dresses.

From there I would then go by bus (which in London is free as I’m under 11) to go and see my great cousin Damon who is only a year old but he is cute. I would then take Summer to the cinema and spend £4 on a cinema ticket for me as Summer gets in free, to go and see something very funny. Then I would spend £5 to go swimming as I love to swim and I’m really good at it and I would invite Tara to come with me.

I would then go by car with baby Ben to Banham Zoo which will cost me £7.70 to get in and it’s free for baby Ben as he is under 3 years old, and I would spend £7 in the gift shop. Then I would spend £7.50 as an entry fee to the Parrot Zoo in Skegness as I love parrots. I hold Ruby, which is my aunt’s African grey parrot, and she likes me a lot.

And with the last of my money £3.80 I would buy some sweets and chocolate to share with Tara, Summer and baby Ben.

This whole week, Class 3 are creating artwork and text based around the short film, The Lucky Dip. We began today by listening to the soundtrack from the film’s opening, and painting what we could hear. Then, we wrote imaginative sentences to accompany our paintings.

What do you think? Can you guess which piece of art was created by which child?

Then we looked up the meanings for each year. We have two goats, three monkeys, six roosters and two dogs in school today!

We also had delicious Chinese food for lunch- but we ate it so quickly that there was no time to take a photo!

Class 3 said they would like more themed days like this.
