Blogging from A to Z: Inventions

We created an A to Z of words that made us think about something we’ve learned about the Victorians, and used them for inspiration to write our blog posts. Some links are more obvious than others, but all of our posts are original, interesting and the result of our hard work! Enjoy 🙂

In the Victorian era, lots of men and women changed and improved the way we live our lives today.

In 1837, the Electric Telegraph was invented by the marvellous William Cooke and Charles Wheston. In the year of 1839, photographic paper was invented by the spectacular W.H. Fox-Talbot, closely followed by the steam-powered paddle boat by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The next year, pre-paid postage was created by Rowland Hill.

Four years later, in 1844, the code for boats Morse Code was named after its creator Samuel Morse. One extraordinary year later the rubber tyre was made by Robert Tomson and first appeared on a cart (but shortly was taken off due to the fact that it was not very good!). In 1850, red post boxes began to appear on our map. After a dull twenty one years, James Starley invented the wonderful Penny Farthing.

The telephone was born in 1876, the work of Alexander G. Bell, and was shortly followed by the light bulb (Thomas Edison was the creator). Karl Benz created the notorious petrol motor car (that is where Mercedes Benz comes from). Ten years later, Marconi invented the wireless radio.

That was a list of some of the most important and life-changing inventions from the Victorian era. Just think what life would be like now without them!

Baking a Cake with Jack Pearson

0

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Jack P | Posted on January 19, 2016

It was a cold winter’s afternoon. Tom being Tom had got himself in a spot of bother with mum. “Turn that off now, you’ve had enough electric for one day” she said. The next thing we knew Mr. Bean was off and on came the radio. Then we knew, baking time was upon us. We washed our hands and stepped forth towards the mighty cupboard. Men had been lost, women never seen again who had dared to delve into this cupboard.

I shouted from the chair, “Are we using the golden recipe?” I knew we were going to because it was too good to pass up.
“Shout out the ingredients Jack” came Tom’s voice.” Ready or not, here they come” I said.

Ingredients for Mum’s Sponge Cake (or fairy cakes).

Eggs (3)
Sugar (same weight as the three eggs)
Butter (same weight as the three eggs)
Self raising flour (again same weight)
Baking powder (1 good tsp)
Chocolate powder (3 1/2 tbsp)
Icing sugar (to decorate)
More butter (for decoration)

You will also need

Grease proof paper
2 x 20cm sponge tins
Fairy cake tins and cases
Method

Step 1

Turn the oven on at 180. Then put sugar and butter in the mixer and mix
until white and fluffy.

Step 2

Add 1/3 of your flour and eggs (which should be beaten as late as possible to keep their energy). Whisk at intervals add in flour and eggs every time. Remember to add in the baking powder to your flour.

Step 3

Line the tin (this prevents the cake sticking). I suggest putting grease proof paper in.
Before dividing – add in any flavouring you may like i.e. chocolate. Finally whisk.
Split the mixture 50/50 so it looks the same. If you are making fairy cakes add small amounts to the cases. You can fill them up if needed.
Bake for about 20 minutes untill well risen and golden brown and firm to the touch.
Allow to cool before decorating.

Step 4

Decorate. Butter icing is very tasty and easy to make. Put butter in a bowl and mix until pale and soft. Then add icing sugar to the butter and mix until its creamy. Then it’s perfect. Apply to the cake or cakes. Cover with a cloth so they don’t dry out.

Then enjoy.

Our day at the Snow Centre

As part of our Frozen Kingdom topic, we took part in a thrilling adventure at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

When we arrived, we were given our ski boots and skis for our first activity. Heavy and tight, clumpy and painful, the boots were essential kit. Next, we chose a helmet and listened to our instructors. Photo 24-11-2015, 11 30 10 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 34 20 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 34 15 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 03 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 02 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 00

Skiing was fun but hard: the triangle position and walking in the skis made our legs tired and, if you angled the skis in the wrong way, you might even end up going backwards! Lewie and Jack R were naturals, but everyone did well with this new sport.

After lunch, we put on different boots because it was time to try snowboarding! The instructor showed us how to strap into the boards and slow ourselves down once we started moving. We all had a try and- apart from a few people landing on their bottoms- we picked it up quite quickly. It wasn’t long before we were riding the boards down a slope and even doing some tricks! Jack P, Callum M, Finley and Max made it look easy by mastering it straight away but Elisha, Amber, Jake and Matthew soon followed in their tracks. It was great fun!

Our final activity was sledging. This was the noisiest and busiest activity!

Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 12 Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 45 Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 13

Everyone had a try, and it was certainly hilarious to watch! Foam snowmen were set up at the bottom of the slope for target practice and Jacob C, Jack P, Finley and Charlie took them down on their first go. Jacob R floated down the slope like a snow king; Ethan high-fived passers-by; Jack A was attacked by a gang of inflatable doughnuts and Lani span (and screamed) all the way down! Miss West was particularly amused with Johnny’s emergency exit over the barrier… Callum H tried a bobsleigh technique with Max and Callum M, ending up in a tangle of limbs against the barrier. Luckily, the only injury was aching tummies from laughing so hard!

Video 24-11-2015, 14 53 20

We all enjoyed our day at the Snow Centre, and were disappointed when it was time to leave! We tried to decide which activity was our favourite- but we had a huge amount of fun with all of them!

Ryan said, “Sledging was my favourite because we got to knock down snowmen.”

“My favorite was skiing,” said Ellie. “Even though it was challenging, I’d like to do it again.”

Chris enjoyed the sledging most. He said, “On most of my runs, I fell down and it was funny for other people to watch!”

Tall Tales…

1

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Elisha, Jack P | Posted on October 22, 2015

We all know it’s wrong to tell lies, but a tall tale can be very amusing!

Today we played a game where we had to use certain, randomly-chosen items to escape a dangerous situation. What would you do if you were chased up a tree by a bear? How would you escape armed only with some lipstick, a Jenga game piece and some of Mr T’s bling? Or a pantomime horse costume?

Dear Diary…

What I am now writing is gross but quite funny! Also, it is dangerous. Never do this at home!

So, it started like this: a bear was chasing me, so, I ran up a tree, but, it was a grizzly brown bear so it can climb trees. It wasn’t the best place to hide… It was a girl bear so it saw my bright red lipstick and, just to get her away, I threw it down to her; she was delighted to have it. She came back but, of course, I did not have any more lipstick so I said, “What do you want?” and she said, “I want to play Jenga!” So I got a Jenga stick and shaped it like an arrow and threw it at her bottom. She screamed and ran home.

Next came her mother- furious! I said, “Why are you furious?” and she said, “Because you have hurt my daughter!” Then she saw Mr T’s jewellery and said, “I want that jewellery!” So I gave her it. And I never saw the bear family again!

Elisha

So I’m trapped up a tree with a bear attacking me… Harry Potter’s owl (Hedwig) flew with a pantomime horse outfit and a tin of Alphabetti Spaghetti. I poured the the spaghetti into the horse costume and dropped it- and he bit it! He didn’t like it much, so, convinced he had eaten the horse, he walked away.

BOYS sentences

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Amber, Ethan, Finley, Jack P, Jacob R, Johnny | Posted on October 1, 2015

In English, we’ve learned a new Alan Peat sentence called BOYS, which stands for BUT, OR, YET and SO. We have to remember to use a comma too!

Grimstone was annoying Jelly, so Jelly threw his sweets everywhere. (Johnny)

Mr Lightspeed was surprised to see Sennapod, yet his startled face was hidden by a phoney smile. (Jack P)

Buffy was being naughty, so I rode her more. (Amber)

Jelly was enormous, but that did not stop him from popping sweets into his mouth. (Jacob R)

I couldn’t stand not going on a train, so I rode one. (Ethan)

Jelly was annoying Grimstone, yet he wouldn’t show it. (Finley)

Act II drama workshop

On Tuesday, 9th of June, Class 2 and Class 3 from Gedney Drove End and Holbeach St Marks went to the village hall to take part in a drama workshop organised by Father Johnathon and Spalding based Act II.

First, we played some games with Charlotte and Alice to help us relax and prepare for rehearsals. They were great fun and we’d like to play them again in school.

Photo 09-06-2015 10 36 33

Photo 09-06-2015 10 36 29

We all read through the poem to see what it was all about- and then we were ready to begin!

Together, we made up actions to go with the first two verses.

Photo 09-06-2015 11 20 49

After that, we split into groups of six or seven and each group had a verse to act out. It was lots of fun making up actions to go with the words!

Then, we put it all together and watched each other’s performances. We rehearsed it a few times until we were perfect and knew when it was our turn to perform.

At the end of the acting, we had to sing a song. Elisha was chosen to perform a solo and we all joined in with her.

Soon, after lunch, we learned a dance to “Spirit in the sky” (which only the teachers, who are older, knew). It had great actions and was lots of fun to do!

Photo 09-06-2015 14 33 36

We then mashed it all together from start to finish and prepared for our performance at 2:15pm.

When the time came, we were nervous but excited to be performing to such a large crowd! We loved practising- but was it enough?

Father Johnathon spoke to the audience for a while, then Charlotte and Alice introduced us. It was showtime!

Photo 09-06-2015 14 32 29

The crowd went wild and really enjoyed our performance- almost as much as we did! They clapped and cheered for a long time.

All in all, we had a lovely day and would like to say thank you to the organisers and audience.

Our Roman Banquet

To celebrate the end of this term’s topic, the children chose to host a Roman banquet.

Years 4 and 5 planned it carefully while Year 6 were busy taking their SATs. They designed the invitations, chose the menu, made decorations, organised entertainment and created prizes and souvenirs for all the guests. They were very busy and did a fantastic job!

On the morning of the banquet, we also made bread to eat as one of the (many) courses.

Tom and the Monster Mound

3

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Jack P | Posted on May 13, 2015

Tom was a mysterious boy who liked to explore. One strange day, Tom was in the car with his mum driving to his Nan’s house.

The road was long with tall hedges either side. His eye spotted a hill but they kept on going. Suddenly, he asked, “Why are we going anyway? You said you hated them, didn’t you?”

“Hate them? I don’t hate them- I just don’t understand them sometimes! We do what we do.”

So little Tom was confused. He just looked out of his window as they passed house after house until they came to his Nan’s house.

Tom’s mum said, “Stop there while I ask your Nan about…” and then she left. Without a single moment’s thought he ran to listen but then he heard a mouse coming from a hill in their garden. It had an arched door. Quickly, he peered in only to find a tube of purple liquid. Near to him was a control panel and a movable platform on beds. Tom heard his mum’s voice so he ran to the car at the speed of light. Luckily, he was in time so she didn’t know he had been in the garden or hill. To his surprise, mum came out laughing. On the way home Tom could not help but think about the laboratory he had seen in his Nan’s garden.

When they got down the end of the road, they heard an explosion. They rushed back- only to find the house opposite exploded and the remains ablaze. Mum told Tom not to panic and said that it would be alright.

The next day, Tom was sent to his Nan and Granddad’s house again. Mum left without a trace- not a single word! Tom went out to play when, suddenly, he saw a tail and went to follow it.

Once he was round the hill, the great big showed a row of lethal fangs… The thing was blue, with green spikes, and it stood upright, with two bulky arms and knife-like claws. Feeling scared, Tom ran to his mum’s car (which had only just arrived).

He asked, “Where is Nan?”

“In the garden- why?”

“Arrrr!”

Tom has now come to the conclusion and who would have thought it?

His grandparents are aliens!
