Blogging from A to Z: Prison Then! Prison Now!

We created an A to Z of words that made us think about something we’ve learned about the Victorians, and used them for inspiration to write our blog posts. Some links are more obvious than others, but all of our posts are original, interesting and the result of our hard work! Enjoy 🙂

The prisons now are a lot different  to the prisons in the Victorian era. It is thanks to Elizabeth Fry that the prisons have changed in a big way. She thought that criminals should still be treated like human beings.

The prisons today are different by a lot. To get in prison today, you need to commit a serious crime. The cells are different too, so you only get one to four people in a cell.

The prisons back then were a lot worse. To get put in prison, a small crime like not paying your bills would result in you and your family being put in jail. In the prison, there was only one cell and everyone was put in this one cell. You would have to cook your own food, sleep, wash and go to the toilet in the same cell with everyone else.

I think that the prisons today are a lot better because you don’t need to cook your own food and you don’t have to share a cell lots of other people. Also, your entire family doesn’t have to go to prison too.

Now you can see the difference between the prisons today and the Victorian prisons.

Our day at the Snow Centre

As part of our Frozen Kingdom topic, we took part in a thrilling adventure at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

When we arrived, we were given our ski boots and skis for our first activity. Heavy and tight, clumpy and painful, the boots were essential kit. Next, we chose a helmet and listened to our instructors. Photo 24-11-2015, 11 30 10 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 34 20 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 34 15 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 03 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 02 Photo 24-11-2015, 11 31 00

Skiing was fun but hard: the triangle position and walking in the skis made our legs tired and, if you angled the skis in the wrong way, you might even end up going backwards! Lewie and Jack R were naturals, but everyone did well with this new sport.

After lunch, we put on different boots because it was time to try snowboarding! The instructor showed us how to strap into the boards and slow ourselves down once we started moving. We all had a try and- apart from a few people landing on their bottoms- we picked it up quite quickly. It wasn’t long before we were riding the boards down a slope and even doing some tricks! Jack P, Callum M, Finley and Max made it look easy by mastering it straight away but Elisha, Amber, Jake and Matthew soon followed in their tracks. It was great fun!

Our final activity was sledging. This was the noisiest and busiest activity!

Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 12 Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 45 Photo 24-11-2015, 14 52 13

Everyone had a try, and it was certainly hilarious to watch! Foam snowmen were set up at the bottom of the slope for target practice and Jacob C, Jack P, Finley and Charlie took them down on their first go. Jacob R floated down the slope like a snow king; Ethan high-fived passers-by; Jack A was attacked by a gang of inflatable doughnuts and Lani span (and screamed) all the way down! Miss West was particularly amused with Johnny’s emergency exit over the barrier… Callum H tried a bobsleigh technique with Max and Callum M, ending up in a tangle of limbs against the barrier. Luckily, the only injury was aching tummies from laughing so hard!

Video 24-11-2015, 14 53 20

We all enjoyed our day at the Snow Centre, and were disappointed when it was time to leave! We tried to decide which activity was our favourite- but we had a huge amount of fun with all of them!

Ryan said, “Sledging was my favourite because we got to knock down snowmen.”

“My favorite was skiing,” said Ellie. “Even though it was challenging, I’d like to do it again.”

Chris enjoyed the sledging most. He said, “On most of my runs, I fell down and it was funny for other people to watch!”

To, too or two?

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Amber, Callum H, Callum M, Charlie, Elisha, Eloise, Finley, Jack R, Jacob C, Jacob R, Jake, Johnny, Lani, Matthew C, Ryan | Posted on November 23, 2015

Today, we looked at the difference between to, too and two, which are often confused- even by grown ups!

We learned that:

to is used with a destination or verb (I am going to the park; I want to play down the park)

too is used “as well” or to emphasise (I enjoyed it too; The food was too spicy for me)

two is a number (I had two puddings)

We wrote our own sentences using to, too or two. Did we use them correctly?

Our Roman Banquet

To celebrate the end of this term’s topic, the children chose to host a Roman banquet.

Years 4 and 5 planned it carefully while Year 6 were busy taking their SATs. They designed the invitations, chose the menu, made decorations, organised entertainment and created prizes and souvenirs for all the guests. They were very busy and did a fantastic job!

On the morning of the banquet, we also made bread to eat as one of the (many) courses.

Resistance training on our sword-wielding arms

The children were thrilled to be accepted into Gladiator School, and devised a training regime to ensure they had strength, speed and stamina in the arena.

We tested the regimes and evaluated how effective they were in making us fit, strong and ready for battle!

The Lucky Dip

This whole week, Class 3 are creating artwork and text based around the short film, The Lucky Dip. We began today by listening to the soundtrack from the film’s opening, and painting what we could hear. Then, we wrote imaginative sentences to accompany our paintings.

What do you think? Can you guess which piece of art was created by which child?

China Day

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Callum H, Callum M, Eloise, Jack P, Jacob C, Jacob R, Johnny, Lani, Matthew C | Posted on February 13, 2015

Today, the whole school took part in activities for China Day. In Class 3, we made shadow puppets and retold the story of the New Year Race.

Then we looked up the meanings for each year. We have two goats, three monkeys, six roosters and two dogs in school today!

We also had delicious Chinese food for lunch- but we ate it so quickly that there was no time to take a photo!

Class 3 said they would like more themed days like this.

Emo, comma sentences

0

Posted by gedneydroveend | Posted in Callum H, Callum M, Eloise, Jack P, Jacob C, Jacob R, Johnny, Lani, Matthew C | Posted on February 2, 2015

Today, in guided writing, we practised writing emo, comma sentences. These use an emotion (angry, happy, worried etc) followed by a comma as the opener. Here are some of our best from today:

Frightened, Max and I ran away from Little Legs and Kerry. Matthew M

Startled, one of the sheep left the herd. Sam

Worried, I hid under the table, questioning who was there… Natasha

Delighted, I stroked the dolphin. Matthew C

Zonked, I lay back in my warm bubble bath. Jack

Startled, the goat scrambled away from the huntsman. Jacob C

Curious, Max looked at the thing on the stair. Shane

Surprised, Natasha opened her present- only to find second-hand socks that had had someone’s cheesy feet in before. Lani

Shocked, I gasped as loud as a lion. Callum M

Worried, I ran into my mum’s room. Johnny

Delighted, I opened my bag of Gedneys. Ellie

Delighted, Shane cut his tasty birthday cake up. Callum H

Surprised, I saw my emo, comma sentence on the wall. Jacob R

Multiplication Facts- the fun way!

Learning multiplication facts can be tricky, but not in Class 3! We devised games to make practising fun and taught them to our friends.
