Class 3 Gedney Drove End 

 

We created an A to Z of words that made us think about something we’ve learned about the Victorians, and used them for inspiration to write our blog posts. Some links are more obvious than others, but all of our posts are original, interesting and the result of our hard work! Enjoy 🙂

Hi, my name is Ryan and these are my Top 5 Victorian Machines.

 

5: At 5, it’s the telephone, which was invented in 1876.

4: At 4, it’s the electric telegraph, invented in 1837

3: Making its spot at 3, it’s the wireless radio, invented in 1895.

2: Almost at the top spot (it took some time deciding whether this was first or second) in 2nd place, it’s the lightbulb, invented in 1876 by Thomas Edison.

1: And at no. 1 it’s the machine that changed everyone’s lives: the car, invented in 1885 by Karl Benz.

 

Fun Fact: Karl Benz in the man who made the company Mercedes Benz.

It’s World Book Day and we’ve been sharing and celebrating some of our favourite book characters. Can you guess who we are?

Which is your favourite?

 

As part of our topic, Class 3 designed, made and taste-tested space-themed chocolate treats. Can you tell by our expressions how yummy they were?

As part of our Frozen Kingdom topic, we took part in a thrilling adventure at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

When we arrived, we were given our ski boots and skis for our first activity. Heavy and tight, clumpy and painful, the boots were essential kit. Next, we chose a helmet and listened to our instructors. 

Skiing was fun but hard: the triangle position and walking in the skis made our legs tired and, if you angled the skis in the wrong way, you might even end up going backwards! Lewie and Jack R were naturals, but everyone did well with this new sport.

After lunch, we put on different boots because it was time to try snowboarding! The instructor showed us how to strap into the boards and slow ourselves down once we started moving. We all had a try and- apart from a few people landing on their bottoms- we picked it up quite quickly. It wasn’t long before we were riding the boards down a slope and even doing some tricks! Jack P, Callum M, Finley and Max made it look easy by mastering it straight away but Elisha, Amber, Jake and Matthew soon followed in their tracks. It was great fun!

Our final activity was sledging. This was the noisiest and busiest activity!

Everyone had a try, and it was certainly hilarious to watch! Foam snowmen were set up at the bottom of the slope for target practice and Jacob C, Jack P, Finley and Charlie took them down on their first go. Jacob R floated down the slope like a snow king; Ethan high-fived passers-by; Jack A was attacked by a gang of inflatable doughnuts and Lani span (and screamed) all the way down! Miss West was particularly amused with Johnny’s emergency exit over the barrier… Callum H tried a bobsleigh technique with Max and Callum M, ending up in a tangle of limbs against the barrier. Luckily, the only injury was aching tummies from laughing so hard!

We all enjoyed our day at the Snow Centre, and were disappointed when it was time to leave! We tried to decide which activity was our favourite- but we had a huge amount of fun with all of them!

Ryan said, “Sledging was my favourite because we got to knock down snowmen.”

“My favorite was skiing,” said Ellie. “Even though it was challenging, I’d like to do it again.”

Chris enjoyed the sledging most. He said, “On most of my runs, I fell down and it was funny for other people to watch!”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Today, we looked at the difference between to, too and two, which are often confused- even by grown ups!

We learned that:

to is used with a destination or verb (I am going to the park; I want to play down the park)

too is used “as well” or to emphasise (I enjoyed it too; The food was too spicy for me)

two is a number (I had two puddings)

We wrote our own sentences using to, too or two. Did we use them correctly?

When I first heard of geocaching I thought it was boring but when I signed up I loved it! I looked for one in Long Sutton and at first I couldn’t find it, but then a month later I managed to find it.

I then found another one called Mo Chickens which I found straight away but I cannot tell you where it was!

 

Last week we went on a school trip to ferry meadows and went looking for geocaches. We nearly got muggled! When we were looking for one geocache, two people (Sam and Shane) chose me to find a specific geocache (an fm rumble one) and we went through a hedge and saw a path and followed it like the yellow brick road from the wizard of oz and found it.

I was really good at finding fm rumbles.

And we got muggled!

When I was off school and poorly we went to Kings Lynn to look for the church micro and we couldn’t find it.

We also looked for one on the old A17 and we couldn’t find it either. It was a TB hotel one.

On Tuesday, 9th of June, Class 2 and Class 3 from Gedney Drove End and Holbeach St Marks went to the village hall to take part in a drama workshop organised by Father Johnathon and Spalding based Act II.

First, we played some games with Charlotte and Alice to help us relax and prepare for rehearsals. They were great fun and we’d like to play them again in school.

We all read through the poem to see what it was all about- and then we were ready to begin!

Together, we made up actions to go with the first two verses.

After that, we split into groups of six or seven and each group had a verse to act out. It was lots of fun making up actions to go with the words!

Then, we put it all together and watched each other’s performances. We rehearsed it a few times until we were perfect and knew when it was our turn to perform.

At the end of the acting, we had to sing a song. Elisha was chosen to perform a solo and we all joined in with her.

Soon, after lunch, we learned a dance to “Spirit in the sky” (which only the teachers, who are older, knew). It had great actions and was lots of fun to do!

We then mashed it all together from start to finish and prepared for our performance at 2:15pm.

When the time came, we were nervous but excited to be performing to such a large crowd! We loved practising- but was it enough?

Father Johnathon spoke to the audience for a while, then Charlotte and Alice introduced us. It was showtime!

The crowd went wild and really enjoyed our performance- almost as much as we did! They clapped and cheered for a long time.

All in all, we had a lovely day and would like to say thank you to the organisers and audience.

Congratulations to Ryan, who is our Writer of the Week!

To celebrate the end of this term’s topic, the children chose to host a Roman banquet.

Years 4 and 5 planned it carefully while Year 6 were busy taking their SATs. They designed the invitations, chose the menu, made decorations, organised entertainment and created prizes and souvenirs for all the guests. They were very busy and did a fantastic job!

On the morning of the banquet, we also made bread to eat as one of the (many) courses.

 

The banquet started with some entertainment, which definitely helped us work up an appetite!

 

The food, contributed by the children and their kind parents, was stunning.

 

After all that, it was time for a little rest…

 

Everyone had a fantastic time! Class 3 would like to thank all the grown ups who provided the food and drink we enjoyed today. We really do appreciate the effort you made 🙂

Our Year 4 children were invited to take part in a special celebration of the story of Noah.

They explored the story through art, drama, dance and music- and everyone had a wonderful time!
